Maths is a key skill for success in a variety of careers. Your Level 3 subjects must include mathematics; for instance, A-level Mathematics or IMA Polymaths Certificate (with a score of at least 900 out of 1200 points). Preference will be given to applicants with grade B or above in A-level Mathematics and to candidates with successful completion of Further Mathematics at A-level.

You should also have five GCSEs at grade C or above or grade 4 to 9 (or equivalent) including English.

If you have non-standard qualifications, or have narrowly failed to meet the standard entry requirements, we may still invite you to interview and ask you to undertake a diagnostic test that involves solving short routine problems of A-level standard in an informal one-to-one meeting.

You’ll be required to attend an interview and/or provide a portfolio of work.

Career opportunities

This course is an integrated Master’s programme covering all the topics that would be expected in high-quality undergraduate mathematics degrees, as well as in-depth, career relevant applications in the later part of the course.

Studying mathematics helps develops skills and knowledge that are in high demand; our Mathematics degree is a good preparation for any area of employment that requires clear and logical thinking. You’ll have the chance to develop key transferable skills during this course, including advanced numeracy, the ability to analyse and interpret large quantities of data, finding patterns and drawing conclusions, designing and conducting observational and experimental studies, problem solving abilities, working methodically and accurately, constructing logical arguments and exposing illogical ones, presenting a solution clearly, and making your assumptions clear.

What can I do with this qualification?

There is a demand for mathematicians and statisticians across a wide range of sectors. Academic research is a common career path, as are careers in business, IT, economics, banking and finance. Those who have specialised in statistics can find work in the NHS, local authorities, education, the pharmaceutical industry, insurance, market research and marketing companies and accountancy firms. There are also opportunities for employment with publicly-funded-research institutes or government agencies.

Mathematics graduates can also progress to graduate long term employment contracts, usually with a large corporate company offering advanced training packages. Further study is also a popular option for Mathematics graduates. Many graduates go on to do a postgraduate teacher training course, or study for a PhD in a variety of subjects that are useful for careers in operational research, medical statistics in pharmaceutical companies, meteorology and engineering design.

Other careers, including most finance-related or actuarial work, require further study during employment to complete professional exams.

Professional recognition

The University of Bolton’s MMath Mathematics and Statistics is accredited by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications to meet the educational requirements of the Chartered Mathematician designation when followed by subsequent training and experience in employment to obtain equivalent competences to those specified by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for taught Master’s degrees.

The fees for a student’s course of study will be set for the normal duration of that course subject only to inflationary increases – measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) recorded in March each year to take effect for subsequent start dates.

Teaching, learning and assessment

The MMath Mathematics with Statistics programme is taught mainly through informal, interactive classroom sessions with fairly small groups of students. You’ll have the opportunity to participate in discussions and activities in class, as well as getting hands on with practical or computer-based work.

In class you’ll also be expected to take part in group activities, such as quiz-style exercises. Approximately a third of learning time is taken up with tutorial work. You’ll be expected to devote time to independent study and may choose to build skills in practise with an optional work placement module.

Assessments take a variety of forms, such as tests in class, coursework, practical programming exercises, time-constrained formal examinations and a dissertation with viva.
