Your Level 3 subjects must include mathematics, science or another relevant subject; for instance, A-level Biology/Physics or BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science/Engineering. Please note that Health and Social Care is not considered a relevant subject.
You should also have five GCSEs at grade C or above or grade 4 to 9 (or equivalent) including English, Mathematics and Science.
You may be required to attend an interview, provide a portfolio of work and take a diagnostic assessment. If the diagnostic assessment shows that you need additional mathematics tuition, you'll be required to take an additional module (Foundation Principles 0: ATT3037 ). This will help develop your understanding of the mathematics underpinning engineering and support you to succeed during your studies and future career.
If English isn’t your first language you’ll also need IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in any band (or equivalent). We also accept a range of other English language qualifications – please visit our English Language Requirements web page for more details. Find out more
Career opportunities
The role of a medical engineer involves the research and development of medical applications, treatments or diagnostic technologies. Responsibilities often include testing and evaluating medical devices and advising hospitals and medical centres on new biomedical purchases.
As a Medical Engineering with Foundation graduate, you’ll be detail-oriented and able to demonstrate creative and analytical thinking. You should also be able to demonstrate your skills in teamwork and leadership, as much of the work will be collaborative in nature.
What can I do with this qualification?
Graduate medical engineers are employed by research organisations, manufacturers, government agencies or major medical centres and hospitals. Health authorities in the UK are one of the largest employers; there are employment opportunities within the NHS as a clinical engineer, providing a wide variety of diagnostic and therapeutic services in collaboration with medical professionals.
Medical engineers may specialise in medical devices, nanotechnology or other subjects. There are also employment opportunities in the broader mechanical engineering sector.
