Course details

Motorsport is exciting – for the drivers, for the spectators and for the engineers and technicians involved. If the idea of a career striving to achieve optimal performance and efficiency in race car design and set-up gets your motor revving then this is the course for you.

At the University of Bolton you can study in the classroom, in the laboratory, in the workshop and on the race track. We want to help you gain a sound understanding of the engineering principles and theories essential in motorsport technology, and develop your practical expertise in our industry-standard facilities and while working with our partner racing teams.

The foundation year is the first year of this degree, offering an excellent grounding in the fundamentals of engineering, electronics and mathematics. It’s designed to prepare you for degree level study.

Following on from this, you’ll look at all aspects of race cars and motorsport. Modules cover aerodynamics, performance optimisation, aspects of safety and much more. We work to help you develop skills in motorsport-focused computer aided design (CAD), engineering, mathematics, business and management. This combination of technical knowledge, practical experience and transferable skills will help you get ready for success in this high-octane industry.

Any subjects are acceptable at Level 3. You should also have five GCSEs at grade C or above or grade 4 to 9 (or equivalent) including English, Mathematics and Science.

You may be required to attend an interview and/or provide a portfolio of work.

Career opportunities

This course focuses on developing your understanding of the theory and practice of designing and manufacturing high performance vehicles. Throughout your studies, you’ll have opportunities to develop your knowledge of vehicle handling, chassis aerodynamics and suspension mechanics, as well as automotive/motorsport computer systems and electronics, the fundamentals of internal combustion science and wider engineering issues.

We’ll also support you to gain transferable skills such as project management, team working, IT and formal presentations, and help you develop the intellectual capabilities of research, problem solving, evaluation and synthesis.

What can I do with this qualification?

The UK competes on the world stage in performance engineering and an exciting range of varied opportunities are available. Careers in motorsport engineering are diverse and employers range from racing teams, to manufacturers and through to supply chain businesses. Fundamental engineering knowledge and related transferable skills are sought after by the global engineering industry, including automotive, aerospace, marine and rail companies.

With experience, you could specialise in a particular engineering field, like engine transmission or electronics. You could also progress to test or workshop manager, chief engineer, technical coordinator or technical manager. If you gain experience in creative design, you could move into the graphic design field. Teaching and lecturing at universities or colleges is a possibility if you have a master’s or PhD in mechanical or automotive engineering.

The fees for a student’s course of study will be set for the normal duration of that course subject only to inflationary increases – measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) recorded in March each year to take effect for subsequent start dates.

Teaching, learning and assessment

We use a variety of teaching, learning and assessment methods to help you to achieve your potential. Formal timetabled sessions, such as lectures, seminars and tutorials, offer you knowledge of the concepts and principles essential in engineering. You’re then expected to build on these in your own time through extra reading, revision and reflection on what you have learned.

Open-ended projects and design, make and test activities give you the chance to apply the principles you’ve learned, bringing the concepts and practical applications together in your mind. Opportunities to work with racing team staff on real-life projects and at race meetings also help you hone your new skills and develop your ability to apply your engineering knowledge and creativity.

Regular assessments, including written exams, coursework and practical exams, and feedback from these, will help you to identify areas for improvement.
