Created especially for existing SEN teachers, this qualification aims to help you progress in your teaching career by developing your skills and knowledge to a professional level.

You’ll have the opportunity to develop your understanding of teaching learners with additional needs, while exploring a range of learning and disability impairments and their impact on learning and teaching.

The course has a strong emphasis on integrating the theory and practice of key issues within this vital field of work. The programme is designed to enhance your knowledge of post-14 SEN teaching, develop how you apply your teaching methods and strategies, increase your understanding of learners’ aspirations and attainments, and extend your professional competencies.

The skills you acquire on the course could improve your work in a number of areas, including lesson planning, self-evaluation, creativity, innovation, and the use of new technology in the SEN classroom.

Entry requirements

You must have a full teacher training qualification such as a Certificate in Education, PGCE or DTLLS; and proven access to 50 hours' relevant specialist SEN teaching practice in a recognised institution.

You should also have experience of working with or volunteering with SEN learners.

You’ll be required to attend an informal interview as part of the application process.

This course involves working unsupervised with children and/or vulnerable young people and adults and you must gain an Enhanced Disclosure certificate from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) before starting your studies. Charges are payable to cover the cost of the DBS Enhanced Disclosure application and annual registration with the online Update Service. Find out more

You'll need to provide satisfactory references, a satisfactory health declaration and a satisfactory student agreement prior to enrolment on the course.

If English isn't your first language you'll also need IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in any band (or equivalent). Find out more

The fees for a student’s course of study will be set for the normal duration of that course subject only to inflationary increases – measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) recorded in March each year to take effect for subsequent start dates.

The University is currently awaiting Government guidelines as to EU fee charges for students commencing study in 2019/20.

Teaching, learning and assessment

A variety of teaching and learning methods will be used throughout the programme. Some of these will take place during formally timetabled classes with your tutor and some will be experienced through workshops, small group and individual practical activities along with structured exercises and discussions. You’ll also receive personal support in tutorials.

The Moodle virtual learning environment provides a platform for you to get involved in e-discussions with peers and tutors. It’s expected that you’ll demonstrate significant independence in your study, taking responsibility for the management of your own learning time.

Assessment will mostly involve course work, with feedback provided in tutorials. You’ll be guided to suitable areas of research and appropriate background reading to help with the required assignments.
