You must have a full teacher training qualification such as a Certificate in Education, PGCE or DTLLS; proven access to 50 hours' relevant specialist teaching practice in a recognised institution; and evidence of level 3 personal and process skills in mathematics.

If you don’t have the required mathematics qualifications, then the University has a pre-course task book and assessment that will enable you to show evidence of your mathematics skills at level 3 and which may be accepted as meeting the entry requirements.

You’ll be required to attend an informal interview as part of the application process.

This course involves working unsupervised with children and/or vulnerable young people and adults and you must gain an Enhanced Disclosure certificate from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) before starting your studies. Charges are payable to cover the cost of the DBS Enhanced Disclosure application and annual registration with the online Update Service. Find out more

You'll need to provide satisfactory references, a satisfactory health declaration and a satisfactory student agreement prior to enrolment on the course.

The fees for a student’s course of study will be set for the normal duration of that course subject only to inflationary increases – measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) recorded in March each year to take effect for subsequent start dates.

The University is currently awaiting Government guidelines as to EU fee charges for students commencing study in 2019/20.

UK undergraduate tuition fees are subject to UK government approval and are subject to the outcome of the Teaching Excellence Framework.

Teaching, learning and assessment

You’ll benefit from a variety of teaching and learning approaches throughout the programme. These are designed to help you acquire and develop the appropriate knowledge, understanding, skills and competences more easily and effectively – and achieve the expected learning outcomes.

There will be formal timetabled classes, small-group sessions, and structured exercises and discussions. You’ll also receive individual support through tutorials, and have access to our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) where you’ll find a range of online resources to support your studies, and a forum where you can discuss your work and enjoy peer and tutor support.

We expect you to dedicate significant time to independent, self-directed study such as background reading, and preparing for practical sessions and assessments. Of course, we’re happy to help you find the independent learning strategies that best support your success on this programme.

Assessments are both formative and summative. You’ll enjoy formative assessments and feedback throughout the programme in tutorials and via observed teaching sessions, and also on aspects of your coursework. Formative assessments do not contribute directly to module marks or final grades, but are designed to help you find the most effective ways to succeed in the summative assessments that determine your ultimate qualification. With this in mind, we’ll guide and direct you to areas of research and appropriate background reading that relate to assignments. The rest is up to you!
