The ability to understand key education challenges and opportunities is crucial to everyone working in the Further Education and Skills sector. If you have up to eight years’ post-teaching-qualification experience, this programme enables you to study the policies and practices that drive current developments in the field.
This Level HE6 FE Teaching LEAD programme seeks to bridge the gap if you work in the FE and Skills sector but are only qualified to industry standards or have Level HE5 qualifications (for instance, HND or Foundation Degree). It' s designed to help you demonstrate and develop your wealth of technical and teaching expertise to Honours level.
You’ll be given the chance to engage with policy and pedagogy in context, as well as develop leadership skills for the classroom and beyond. You’ll also have the opportunity to develop your self-directed study skills, and gain the further knowledge and experience needed for career development and leadership.
A strong focus is placed on understanding the leadership skills best suited to the FE and Skills sector. You’ll study strategic leadership, management of educational change, leadership of educational teams, and professional development.
You’ll also explore the pedagogies that enhance student outcomes and involve the development of learning and enquiry skills, as well as the acquisition of knowledge within a curricular and vocational context.

You’re normally expected to have successfully completed a relevant qualification at Level HE5, such as a Foundation Degree or HND, or a professional qualification at an equivalent level.
You should be supported by your employer within the FE and Skills sector in England and employed on a substantive permanent contract (0.6) or above. You must also have a maximum of 8 years teaching experience and hold a teaching qualification.
You may be required to attend an interview and/or provide a portfolio of work.
If English isn't your first language you'll also need IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in any band (or equivalent). Find out more
This programme is designed to allow practitioners with up to eight years’ post-teaching-qualification experience to engage in a self-development programme that explores their personal self-development alongside the contextualisation of policy and educational leadership within the FE and Skills Sector.
It aims to further develop your self-directed study skills as well as help you gain the further knowledge and experience that is needed for career development and leadership in the FE and skills sector.
What can I do with this qualification?
The main career route is teaching and education. This programme aims to develop your strategic and organisational perspectives on learning, particularly by fostering a critically reflective approach to your practice.
Other related occupations include education advice, primary and secondary education and vocational and industrial training. Students may already be in employment whilst undertaking part-time study to further their professional development. You could also progress onto further CPD courses to enhance your knowledge and skills.

The fees for a student’s course of study will be set for the normal duration of that course subject only to inflationary increases – measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) recorded in March each year to take effect for subsequent start dates.
The University is currently awaiting Government guidelines as to EU fee charges for students commencing study in 2019/20.
UK undergraduate tuition fees are subject to UK government approval and are subject to the outcome of the Teaching Excellence Framework.
Modules listed below are a mixture of compulsory and optional. You may not have the opportunity to study all the modules as part of the course.

Teaching, learning and assessment
You’ll study three modules, each worth 20 credits at HE6.
Learning and teaching will be supported through blended learning using a wide range of teaching methods, including lectures, tutorials, seminars, round table discussions with industry practitioners, case studies, guest speakers from professional practice, and the sector and skill development through peer coaching.
You’ll also have the chance to develop your research skills through individual learning and independent research, and have the opportunity to present your research and critical personal reflections.
There are no written exams on this programme. Instead, you’ll be assessed through a series of assignments. These could include research projects, portfolios, presentations, annotated CVs, and case studies. All assignments are based on theoretical, political or personal development influences on professional practices.
To help keep you on track, our staff provide initial oral feedback on assignment preparation during tutorials and after presentations. You might also receive feedback through email or on our online learning platforms.
