    Course overview

    Studying a Masters degree in a foreign country can be a huge challenge. It’s not just the language that’s different, the culture and way of thinking is often different too. The aims of our International Pre-Masters Semester are to introduce you to a new study culture, develop your subject knowledge and help you improve your English skills. Upon finishing the course, we want you to be confident discussing and evaluating key concepts in Business Management. Teaching is interactive with a strong focus on communication and group work. You will not only learn from your tutors, but also from speaking with other students in the class and producing work together.

    The International Pre-Masters Semester (Business Management) recaps and builds on the key areas covered on an undergraduate degree. It also prepares you for evaluating these concepts and theories more deeply at postgraduate level. This subject content is combined with language and academic skills classes to develop your reading, writing, speaking and listening competence to a high level (comparable to IELTS 6.5). Classes will also focus on understanding, critiquing and using academic texts, writing assignments, participating in lectures and seminars, and other key academic and research skills necessary for postgraduate study.

    All classes are delivered by specialist English for Academic Purposes (EAP) lecturers with a background in Business Management and tutors from the Bolton Business School.

    What you will learn

    The International Pre-Masters Semester (Business Management) covers a range of areas. These include leadership, marketing, Human Resource Management, Financial Management and the business environment. You will be given a range of assessments throughout the course to help prepare you for the assignments, presentations and exams on the postgraduate degree.

    At the end of the International Pre-Masters Semester you will sit English exams and submit a written assignment. These assessments are designed to test your English level comparable to IELTS. However, each week throughout the course you will also produce pieces of writing, give presentations, take part in discussions, listen to lectures, read texts and complete work online. You will receive feedback from your tutors on all of this to help you continuously improve your language and skills.

    What you will study

    The International Pre-Masters Semester (Business Management) has three modules:

    Gateway to Management (IPM6002, 20 credits)

    This module seeks to consolidate your knowledge of key management concepts in order to equip you for a postgraduate degree programme in Business and Management. You will study management and leadership (theory and context), marketing (the nature of marketing, the marketing mix, market segmentation and positioning), Human Resource Management (principles of HR, recruitment and selection, training and development, employee motivation), financial frameworks (the role of financial and management accounting, financial terminology, financial statements) and the business environment (internal environment and external).

    Professional and Research Skills (IMP6001, 20 credits)

    This module aims to equip you with the key professional and research skills needed to succeed in postgraduate study. As well as developing essential skills including information literacy, referencing and plagiarism, academic writing and presentations, you will critically appraise your own learning approaches and formulate strategies for improvement.

    Stage D for Pre-Masters (EFP4006, 20 credits)

    From IELTS 5.0/5.5 – 6.0/6.5. This module has a strong focus on academic literacy. Classes will develop your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills and help you to improve your style, accuracy and vocabulary. You will learn how to access academic sources, how to use ideas from academic texts and lectures in writing and presentations and how to communicate effectively in English with staff and other students. The course will also introduce you to the different types of teaching and assessment you will encounter on UK degree courses.

    Careers & professional development

    The main objective is to prepare you for entry into higher education to study for a postgraduate degree at the University. On successful completion of the International Pre-Masters Semester you will be able to progress onto a range of courses offered by the Bolton Business School.
